CITY OF HENDERSON MUNICIPAL CEMETERIES

The City of Henderson owns and operates 2 municipal cemeteries. Fernwood Cemetery, located off Madison Street and Fairmont Cemetery located on Highway 60 West.

There are 2 mausoleums in Fernwood and 4 in Fairmont plus a Mausoleum Complex with chapel. The cemeteries average 220 grave burials and 15-crypt entombments annually.

Fernwood Cemetery:

Fernwood Cemetery was established in 1849. The earliest recorded sale is dated June 9, 1854. Mr. E.L. Starling purchased Lot No., 208, measuring 22' X 20' containing 12 burial spaces for $30.00.

Fernwood is the final resting-place of several state politicians and other famous citizens.

Two Kentucky Governors are buried in Fernwood Cemetery: Lazarus Whitehead Powell and John Y. Brown. Lazarus Whitehead Powell served the sixteenth term as Kentucky Governor from 1851 until 1895. A twenty-two foot high shaft was placed over his grave made from pure Italian marble. Powell County Kentucky was named in honor of Governor Lazarus. John Y. Brown was born in Hardin County Kentucky and served as Kentucky Governor from 1891 until 1895.

Other famous citizens buried in Fernwood include: Archibald Dixon, served as Lieutenant Governor and US Senator from Kentucky. Dixon was credited with being one of the firsts to push for the construction of a railroad from Henderson to Nashville, James Franklin Clay, a member of the Kentucky State Senate and US Representative and John Dorsey who served as US Representative of Kentucky. There are over 251 veterans from WWI and WWII and the Spanish American War. Mary Towles, the founder of Mother's Day is buried in Fernwood.

Currently there are 46 acres of land in Fernwood Cemetery. There are approximately 19,500 known burials at Fernwood Cemetery.

Fairmont Cemetery:

Fairmont Cemetery was established in 1921 and contains 28-30 acres of land. It is located on Highway 60 and Drury Lane. There are approximately 6,500 burials in Fairmont Cemetery.
